Improving Criticality Through Inquiry: Integrative Approach of Teaching Critical Thinking Skills
Ghada Itayem
Concurrent Session #1
This presentation introduces an innovative pedagogical framework that explicitly teaches critical thinking skills within an inquiry-based learning context while enhancing students' curiosity. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on students' natural development of critical thinking through content exposure, this framework incorporates explicit instruction in analysis and evaluation at each instructional phase. This integrated approach results in measurable improvements in students' analytical and evaluative reasoning, particularly in their ability to identify logical fallacies, assess evidence quality, and construct well-supported arguments.

The "New University" Revisited: Leadership, Activism, and Free Speech from 1970 to the Present
Ali Watts, Dippo Galimoto, Tabitha Starr Barowsky
Concurrent Session #1
This presentation uplifts the history of Bowling Green State University’s “New University”—a rapid (albeit temporary), student-informed curricular restructuring launched in the days following the Kent State Massacre of 1970—as an early experiment in participatory governance and crisis leadership. Drawing on archival records, our presentation compares the “New University’s” institutional openness to recent administrative responses to student anti-war activism. This comparison raises provocative questions about how universities define safety, dissent, and educational purpose in times of moral crisis—and what the “New University” model might teach us about leadership, dialogue, and the boundaries of free speech today.

Rethinking Health Insurance Policies for International Students through an Equity Lens
Ophelia Ivy Mensah
This session explores inequities in health insurance policies affecting international students in U.S. higher education using Bowling Green State University as a case study. Drawing on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the Deficit Thinking Framework, and George Mwangi & Yao's Equity-Driven Internationalization Lens, the presentation highlights how institutional policies can unintentionally limit access to healthcare and well-being. Participants will engage in reflection and discussion to identify equity gaps within their institutions. The session concludes with actionable takeaway strategies to promote affordable, inclusive, and culturally responsive health insurance practices that support student success and belonging.

Developing Distinction: A Historical Look at Honors Education
Alaina Metzler
Poster session
Honors Colleges and Programs recruit and produce some of the most academically talented students at a university. Yet, these students may be overlooked or under supported and too often face negative stereotypes. It is pivotal to study Honors Programs and Colleges historically in order to inform practice and how to best provide for the dynamic needs of these high-achieving students. In addition to covering the general evolution of Honors, this project features a case study of an Honors Program at a small, private, liberal arts university and an Honors College at a mid-size public university.

All-Star Status: Supporting International Student-Athletes in the NIL-Era
Alec R. Arnett
Poster session
What inequities exist for international student-athletes within Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies? A critical policy analysis using Bowling Green State University's NIL policy and other relevant documents exposed three themes: fine print exclusion, restrictive employment policies, and social class discrepancy. Rooted in Museus's (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) model, recommendations aimed toward athletics and senior campus administrators can be adopted to mitigate the effects of these policies.

Journeys to the RA role: Lived experiences of international students of color within the PPCT framework
Anyi Ma
Roundtable #1
This research investigates how international undergraduate students of color navigate access to Resident Advisor (RA) roles at a large U.S. university. While RA participation supports student development, little is known about how intersecting identities—race, ethnicity, and international status—shape access and decision-making. Guided by the Process–Person–Context–Time (PPCT) framework and using a constructivist phenomenological approach, it explores lived experiences to identify barriers and motivators. Findings aim to provide actionable insights for residence life and international student services to advance equity, inclusion, and campus integration for international students of color.

Character Education for an Ideologically Diverse World
Laura M. Harrison, Pete Mather
Roundtable #1
The Higher Education Research Institute survey of 20,000 educators across 100+ universities and disciplines found that about 84% of respondents believed educators have a role in developing students' character and personal values like honesty, integrity, open-mindedness, generosity, compassion, and humility. However, most educators rarely receive guidance or training in students' character development. In this session, we will provide participants with frameworks for inculcating character as well as a forum for sharing their own resources and approaches. We will offer ample opportunity for troubleshooting challenges and building on strengths as identified by the attendees of this session.

Using Art Based Therapy in Higher Education
Amy Payne, Jacob Meyers, James Workman
Learning Lab #1
The use of art-based therapy in higher education, for both the student body and administration, can promote employee well-being, manage stress, and enhance team dynamics in a demanding work environment. While research tends to focus on students, the therapeutic benefits of creative engagement and hands-on experiences are transferable to high-achieving professionals in administrative roles. By creating an outlet for non-verbal expression and mindfulness, art can effectively address the unique pressures faced not only by students but faculty, university leaders and staff.

Teaching skills that help make students competitive in an AI driven world
Gimmick Wilder
Learning Lab #1
We are seeing a decline in bachelor graduates' employability. With AI's ability outpacing many junior-level employees, entry-level jobs are shrinking. This leads to graduates being underemployed or entirely unemployed. Strengthening our students' inimitable human skills and educating them on AI as a tool we can prepare our students to be competitive within the job market. Inimitable skills have been identified, and we need to equip our graduates with them. We have to choose whether we let our students fall to the wayside or adapt to the career readiness of the 4th industrial revolution.

Missing on the Menu: Campus Dining and African International Student Sense of Belonging
Evans L. Aglah, Dr. Ali Watts
Concurrent Session #2
This presentation explores how campus dining services shape African international students' sense of belonging at higher education institutions in the United States. Using student narratives and equity-minded theoretical frameworks, we examine how food availability, cultural representation, and dining practices contribute to experiences of inclusion or alienation. We argue that food is not just nourishment, but a cultural anchor that impacts students' emotional well-being, identity, and adjustment. By centering African students' voices, this session highlights how everyday campus spaces like dining halls can reinforce or challenge exclusion, urging educators to view belonging as an institutional responsibility beyond the classroom.

Between “Home and Homeland:” The Educational Experiences of Ghanaian International Students in U.S. Universities.
Peter Kofi Dabie
Concurrent Session #3
This study explores the lived experiences of Ghanaian international students in U.S. higher education through the lens of bicultural identity formation and acculturation theory. Drawing on phenomenological interviews with 15 Ghanaian students and anchored in John Berry's (2005) acculturation framework, the paper examines how these students navigate educational, cultural, and structural challenges while balancing ties to their homeland with the demands of their host country. The findings highlight the tensions and growth associated with cultural adaptation, identity negotiation, and institutional support structures. The study argues for deeper institutional and transnational engagement with African diaspora students in U.S. academia

Senior year can be a drag; we've all been there. Now add being a student leader to the mix. Senior student leaders often take a step back or overcompensate in their roles, leaving supervisors wondering what's changed. In this Learning Lab, we'll explore why senior leaders disengage and how to recognize the signs in your own teams. Using student development and leadership theories, we'll understand where seniors are coming from and how we, as Graduate Assistants and supervisors, can best support them. Through guided discussion and reflection, you'll leave with practical insights and strategies to keep your senior leaders engaged.

Using Art Based Therapy in Higher Education
Amy Payne, Jacob Meyers, James Workman
Learning Lab #2
The use of art-based therapy in higher education, for both the student body and administration, can promote employee well-being, manage stress, and enhance team dynamics in a demanding work environment. While research tends to focus on students, the therapeutic benefits of creative engagement and hands-on experiences are transferable to high-achieving professionals in administrative roles. By creating an outlet for non-verbal expression and mindfulness, art can effectively address the unique pressures faced not only by students but faculty, university leaders and staff.

“I Think I Have…” – Navigating Internet Self-Diagnosis of Disabilities in College
Madalyn Damron
Roundtable #2
Many students today first learn about disabilities and neurodivergent conditions like ADHD, autism, or anxiety online—through TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, or Instagram. These platforms can be validating and informative, but they can also be confusing, overwhelming, or lead to more questions than answers. This workshop is a judgment-free space to explore the rising trend of internet self-diagnosis—why it happens, what it can offer, what its limits are, and how students can take informed next steps. We'll look at both the benefits and pitfalls of learning about yourself online, and share tools for navigating self-diagnosis responsibly—whether or not someone ever seeks a formal diagnosis.
