From the Historian's Desk
The 2008 OCPA/OASPA Conference was held from January 30-Februray 1, 2008 at the Holiday Inn in Worthington, Ohio. This was the last year we hosted our conference at the Holiday Inn, for the 2009 conference we moved to the Doubletree across the highway. The theme for this conference was “Building the Foundation for our Sustainable Future.” Dr. Howard Sacks, Special Assistant to the President and Director of the Rural Life Center from Kenyon College was the Keynote Speaker. He shared information about how he was able to link local resources and sustainability to the campus community.
Kate Porubcansky was the 2008 Conference Chair and Amy Rosen was the Assistant Conference Chair. Some of the highlights of the conference was the Robert Dubick Case Study Competition, Service Project with the local YWCA of Columbus, Silent Auction, Career Resource Room, and a Closing Keynote Speaker – Dr. Robert DeBard, Associate Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs, Bowling Green State University.
Over 42 program sessions were offered by some old past members, that include Robert Gatti, Otterbein College on “Senior Student Affairs Roundtable”, Susan Eklund-Leen, Antioch College, on “Nightmare on Livermore Street”, Tracy Benner Otterbein College,” When one Mentor Isn’t Enough – Assembling a Professional Advisory Committee”, Peter Mather, Ohio University, on “Service Learning in Honduras” and my favorite “Riding off into the Sunset: How to Leave your First Job”, by Seth Fishman and Mitsu Narui, from The Ohio State University.
